Rodger Moore -James Bond star dies aged 89

Former James Bond star Sir Roger Moore has died Tuesday in Switzerland after a battle with cancer, his children said. He was 89.

British actor Roger Moore, who played the womanising superspy James Bond over two decades with a suave wit, died Tuesday aged 89, his children announced.
"It is with a heavy heart that we must announce our loving father, Sir Roger Moore, has passed away today in Switzerland after a short but brave battle with cancer," they said in a statement published on Twitter.

"We are all devastated," Deborah, Geoffrey and Christian said, adding: "Thank you Pops for being you, and for being so very special to so many people."

Moore won fame as the smooth-talking adventurer Simon Templar in British television show "The Saint" in the 1960s, and also starred alongside Tony Curtis in "The Persuaders" in the 1970s.
But it was not until 1973, at the age of 45, that he won the role that for many fans would come to define him, as Bond novelist Ian Fleming's fictional secret agent.
Moore made his debut as 007 in "Live and Let Die", following it with six more films, only bowing out with 1985's "A View to a Kill", when he was 57.
In later years Moore became known for his humanitarian work, notably through his activities as a UNICEF ambassador, helping raise funds for under-privileged children.

"With the passing of Sir Roger Moore, the world has lost one of its great champions for children - and the entire UNICEF family has lost a great friend," the UN agency's executive director Anthony Lake said.

Moore's children said he considered the UNICEF work -- for which he was given a knighthood in 2003 -- his "greatest achievement".
"We know our own love and admiration will be magnified many times over, across the world, by people who knew him for his films, his television shows and his passionate work for UNICEF, which he considered to be his greatest achievement," they said.
"The affection our father felt whenever he walked on to a stage or in front of a camera buoyed him hugely and kept him busy working into his 90th year, through to his last appearance in November 2016 on stage at London's Royal Festival Hall.
"The capacity crowd cheered him on and off stage, shaking the very foundations of the building just a short distance from where he was born."

They said their thoughts were with his fourth wife, Kristina, adding that there would be a private funeral in Monaco.

Wave of violence in mali , as two UN peacekeepers are killed..Read more

The UN mission in Mali, Minusma, says that two of its peacekeepers have been killed near Aguelhok, in the Kidal region.
Minusma's chief Mahamat Saleh Annadif said: "This attack adds to a wave of violence that, over the past few weeks, has targeted the civilian populations, the Malian Armed Forces and the International Forces without distinction.

"The violence is aimed only at undermining the peace camp's efforts to bring stability and unity to Mali."

The UN work in Mali has been described as the world's most dangerous peacekeeping mission.

More than 100 peacekeepers have been killed there in the past four years, the Washington Post reports.

The blue helmets have been in the north of Mali since 2013 to help bring peace after the country's civil war.

Tony Pulis- West Brom Must Recruit Over The Summer

Tony Pulis admits West Brom will need to spend in the summer, but only for the “right players”.
West Bromwich Albion are expected to “comfortably break previous club records” with their summer outlay.

And they quote Pulis as saying: “I think it’s going to cost more money every year to improve, that’s the way it is.

“But you have to get the right players. It’s not just about bringing players in and spending money, you have to spend the money in the right way and they have to be the right characters and the right players.

“The important thing is they have to be players who are going to be in your starting XI and that moves everything forward.”

Tony Pulis is flying over to Guangzhou tomorrow to speak to owner Guochuan Lai, and will point to this run as evidence the team needs strikers and defenders.

“It’s disappointing,” he said. “The final games of the season have highlighted the fact we need to be better in both thirds of the pitch.

“The opportunities we had when we were in control of the game are there to be taken and we have to take those chances.

“Their first (Swansea) goal is a third division goal. Sigurdsson has got great quality, but our marking is absolutely shocking from two defenders.

“That is what has happened. We’ve been leading games this year. Even if we were a little bit more stubborn we would have drawn games and won games which we haven’t.

“We haven’t been able to see them out. We need to improve at both ends of the pitch.

SA labour federation bans Zuma from its rallies.

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu), a long-time ally of the governing African National Congress (ANC), has banned President Jacob Zuma from addressing its activities.

Reading from a statement at a media briefing on Tuesday following its special executive committee meeting, Coastu secretary-general Bheki Ntshalintshali said: “Comrade Jacob Zuma will no longer be welcome to address Cosatu initiatives.”

Mr Zuma was booed at a May Day rally organised by Cosatu earlier this month.

Factionalism has divided the ANC ahead of its conference at the end of this year, where Mr Zuma is expected to step down as leader of the party.

The country’s largest labour federation reiterated its call that it no longer supports his leadership.

Lagos State Government Terminates N844bn Fourth Mainland Bridge Contract

The Lagos State Government said it has terminated a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with a consortium of firms to build the Fourth Mainland Bridge at the cost of N844 billion.

The state government also said it is presently considering various proposals from foreign investors from the United States of America and Britain, in order to accelerate commencement of the project.

The MOU for the 36 km bridge, which two past administrations had promised to do, was signed on May 25, 2016.

The project was to be financed by Africa Finance Corporation, Access Bank, and other private investors who have already signified intention to be part of the construction, while Visible Assets Limited would be the coordinating firm.

However, the Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Mr. Adebowale Akinsanya, during a ministerial briefing in Alausa, Ikeja area of Lagos, Southwest Nigeria cited the slow pace at which the concessionaire was working as the reason behind the termination of the contract.

He said: “Due to slow pace of work, the contract was terminated. We are now looking at many investors, though interest is very high.”

He said that investors had started scouting for the project from different parts of the world, though the state government had not decided on the proposals it had received.

“The state government has started the proposals. We have such investors from South Korea, Europe and the United States, among few others. What we are doing now is vetting the proposals. We do not want to waste any further time. So works are in top progress on the 4th Mainland Bridge.

“The investors would be named very soon, the state government will enter into concession agreement with appropriate investors that deliver the project,” he said.

Ander Herrera- Zlatan Ibrahimovic Will Help Us In The Europa League Final

Ander Herrera has claimed that Zlatan Ibrahimovic will offer his help to his teammates for Wednesday night’s Europa League final.

The former Sweeden international will play no part in the showdown in Stockholm as he recovers from a serious knee injury, but he will be with the travelling party.

Ashley Young, who is nursing a hamstring problem, will also be with the rest of the squad to provide support.

“When you want to win a European trophy and you want to make a good season, it is not only on the pitch, you need help from the outside,” Goal.com quotes Herrera as saying.

“Zlatan is here to help, Ash is also here to help. We are a team who is together. Everyone is important.”

When Ibrahimovic suffered his injury at the end of last month, concerns arose over whether he would even play again due to the severity of the injury at his age.

Herrera stated at the time that he had no reservations about his return due to the forward’s supreme physical state and that view has not changed after seeing him post-op.

“He is with us, he is supporting us,” Ander Herrera added. “I think he is very good. He is optimistic. He is 100 percent sure he will be back because he cannot stop winning. He cannot stop scoring. For sure he will be back at the best.”

Minister in the Presidency Jeff Radebe during an interview. The minister has issued an apology for engaging in saucy text and email conversations with Siyasanga Mbambani

Minister in the Presidency Jeff Radebe has apologised unreservedly for exchanging explicit text and email messages with an employee in the government’s communications agency.
Radebe told The Star in an exclusive interview on Monday that the scandal was a regrettable moment of weakness.

The Sunday Times revealed that Radebe, 64, had exchanged several improper text messages and emails with a Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) photographer, 29-year-old Siyasanga Mbambani.

The paper reported that Mbambani had exposed the texts between her and Radebe to prove that she was being victimised by her superiors at GCIS, because she was “improperly close” to senior officials at the Union Buildings.

In March, The Sunday Independent reported that Mbambani was suspended at GCIS following a series of sexual harassment complaints against her boss, Elmond Jiyane. She accused him of being sexist when he asked that she dress properly when covering the Presidency.

She alleged at the time that Jiyane had on several occasions falsely accused her of making sexual overtures towards President Jacob Zuma and Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa by being scantily dressed and flashing her “full bums” and breasts at the pair while taking their pictures during events.

She denied the allegations.

The revelations were contrary to the impeccable image Radebe has built in an illustrious career in the government.

But on Monday, the longest-serving cabinet minister and ANC head of policy acted swiftly and took responsibility for his actions.

“I sincerely regret engaging in the text and email conversations, which are improper for a married man,” he said. “However, beyond those exchanges, there was never a relationship and the communication was never acrimonious,” said Radebe.

He added: “I apologise for the embarrassment caused to Ms Mbambani, to my wife, my family, all South Africans and my movement, the ANC. I should have known better and I take full responsibility for my actions.”

On Sunday, Radebe was summoned to the Soweto home of Struggle stalwart Winnie Madikizela-Mandela to explain his actions. Accompanied by his wife Bridgette, Radebe met with Madikizela-Mandela, where he apologised. The family also received counselling from her .

On Monday, Radebe, who attended an ANC national working committee meeting, apologised for his conduct before his comrades.

Madikizela-Mandela told The Star she had been disappointed by the revelations, but held Radebe in high esteem and believes he did well to own up.

“This is the kind of leadership we require,” she said, speaking by phone.

“We all make mistakes and we must take responsibility for them. It takes a real man to apologise, and Jeff has done that. I have known him from when he was a young boy, before he left the country to go into exile.

“He’s an outstanding leader of our movement and we place great hope in him. He played a critical role in exile, and when he returned he served in government since 1994 with distinction and humility.

“Jeff is a highly respected man and one of the surviving cadres of the OR Tambo era (and) what’s left of the Lusaka leadership, who were selfless. In him we see a future. But we all have our flaws.”

Sixolile Mehlomakhulu, chairperson of Alfred Nzo, the second biggest ANC region in the Eastern Cape, said Radebe had apologised at the Saartjie Baartman region, where he addressed cadres and leaders on Sunday.

“He has done a noble thing to apologise. That’s very rare in our politics. That’s the mark of a good leader, the kind of leadership we badly want in the ANC and in the country. Comrade Jeff is receiving unwavering support from us.”

Former mayor and chairperson of the ANC Tshwane region Kgosientso Ramokgopa also came out in his defence. He told The Star he had read the story in the context of the ANC succession race.

“But we accept his apology.

“These things happen even to the best of us. Jeff is our policy guru, he always takes leadership. He is calm and measured. He is the kind of leader we want to see lead our movement,” he said.

This is the first time Radebe, who has served in the cabinets of presidents Nelson Mandela, Thabo Mbeki, Kgalema Motlanthe and Jacob Zuma, has been embroiled in a controversy. But he is the first to act swiftly and without reservations, and to take responsibility.

Iker Casillas Signs Liverpool Pre-Contract Agreement

Iker Casillas has reportedly signed a pre-contract agreement with Liverpool, according

Iker Casillas,36, is believed to be leaving Porto this summer after two years in Portugal. He signed a two year deal in July 2015 with the option of another 12-months, but he has decided to move on.

Casillas, who has been capped 167 times, has offers from Liverpool, Turkey, China and Qatar, according to the Spanish daily.

However, the report claims the former Real Madrid man, who has won the Champions League three times, has penned a pre-contract agreement with Jurgen Klopp’s men as he looks for at least one more season at the top level.

Casillas would bring great experience to Liverpool, having amassed a record 175 appearances in the Champions League as well as winning the World Cup with Spain.

Klopp is believed to be looking to add another goalkeeper to his squad after Loris Karius was signed last summer. Karius started the season as the Reds’ No 1 but lost his place to Simon Mignolet, whose form was good as Liverpool finished the season in the top four.
